Creativity covers so much so this note is my collection of interesting things about it.
In Not Feeling Creative? Try This Trick. Adam Savage answers the question:
Do you have days when you can’t get into a creative mood? What do you do to get rid of the self-doubt and pessimism related to creative process?
He talks about how returning to his cave, he feels connected to his creativity. And how his creativity is motivated and driven partly by the knowledge that life is short and he wants to use his time making things.
He also talks about self-passion during moments when he has the itch to do stuff but he knows he cannot (he uses jet lag as his example and how it’s not safe to operate when jet lagged).
In The Perfect Workshop Laura Kampf talks about how having materials to work with available sparks her creativity:
I never plan anything. I like to have an idea and then just jump right into the build without ordering any materials, without going to the store, without sketching. I just like to get to it right away as fast as I can. And having all this stuff just makes improvising so much easier. So it’s not only that looking at the material really inspires me, it also provides me with most of the materials that I need to build whatever I want to build.
Inspired by this, I started to collect a tiny collection of bits and bobs for the types of projects I wanted to build: mainly tabletop gaming components for prototyping and testing things out.
I wanted to figure out what makes people (especially bloggers) feel creative and how their environment affects it. For the IndieWeb Carnival in May 2024, I invited people to write about their creative environments and got 26 blog posts discussing the topic. It was lovely to hear from so many different people having such varied and diverse approaches to the theme.
