I miss human curation by Cassidy Williams
Cassidy writes about how she misses the “old web” where people wrote personal blogs on platforms that were not powered by recommendation algorithms but rather by people sharing, linking to each other and recommending each other.
She writes about how the recommendation algorithm aims to show you what they think you want to see – and being partially correct - but not making it easy to see what you’ve decided you wanted to see: your friends, the random blogger they discovered and so on.
She mentions how notifications turned the discovery from “I decide when I want to go see if something new has arrived” to someone else deciding it on our behalf and pushing it to our faces. She also links to Lab Note 019 Notifications by Alexander Obenauer.
