February 6th, 2022 New York Times published one of the best nerd snipe crossword puzzles of all time, designed by Stephen McCarthy.
The main clue, 70. The better of two sci-fi franchises, allowed people to choose either Star Wars or Star Trek and all the rest of the clues would work either way.
The designer of the puzzle commented on it in Times’ column saying
“I am a fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek, so it’s nice to be able to highlight both (not to mention the friendly rivalry between the two fandoms) in one puzzle,” McCarthy
It’s such a beauty of puzzle design as it’s quite a challenge to make the four other clues make sense with both TREK and WARS letters in the same spots.
